Joining a Tech Community: A Journey Through Opportunity, Energy, and Connections
Becoming part of a tech community is an extraordinary opportunity to learn, share and grow, both professional and personal. It may seem like a challenge at first, but the networking opportunities, the energy you receive and the people you meet along the way make the experience incredibly enriching.
“Ok, cool, but what do I know about these topics? They all seem like geniuses. Maybe later, when I have more experience…” Or “Where do I start? I don’t know anyone, how do I find my space?…” And again: “Speaking in public? Exposing myself in front of people I don’t know? Are you crazy…”
These were my initial thoughts, and I believe they are common to many. Then, however, comes that person who, when less you expect it, he takes you to an event, he introduces you to someone and, without even realizing it, you’re already part of the community.
Or at least, this was my experience with GDG Pescara. My entry into community happened almost by chance, with a “Do you want to come to Turin? We are organizing an event and we need a hand”, which turned into an exciting journey.
And so, in 2021, I “moved my first chair” to Turin. From that moment, I discovered a welcoming environment and stimulating that pushed me to get involved more and more.
Did you say “move the chair”? Yes, you understood correctly. And this may sound strange, but this is one of the first things they gave me taught.
The Opportunity for Growth and Experimentation
Once the initial insecurity has been overcome, a world of opportunities opens up:
- Learn new technologies: you have access to talks, workshops and open source projects that allow you to experiment a safe environment.
- Improve soft skills: speaking in public, organizing events and working in a team become key skills which are refined over time.
- Gain professional visibility: Contributing to a community can open doors to new job opportunities and unexpected collaborations.
Personally, I have had the opportunity to put my skills into practice in various contexts, both as a speaker and in creation of an app that allowed the participants of the DevFest organized in Pescara to challenge each other and play during the event.
Actively participate in the organization of DevFest, the most important event for a GDG, but also in meetups and smaller aperitech, allowed me to delve deeper into various aspects, refine my organizational skills and improve in teamwork.
The Magic of Networking: Meeting Extraordinary People
One of the most valuable aspects of joining a community is networking. Know people to share with passions and goals create authentic bonds, often turning into valuable friendships and professional collaborations. The community becomes a place where you can receive support, advice and encouragement, a real launching pad towards new adventures.
In my journey, I have been lucky enough to meet incredible people, always ready to offer tools and supportto grow together. These groups not only allowed me to collaborate with professionals, but they also gave life to human bonds that go beyond the technical aspect. By attending events and meeting members of various communities city, I created connections with amazing people all over Italy.
I talked about various communities because, in the area, contaminations and collaborations develop that lead you to attending events seemingly out of your league. This allows you to meet new people, enrich your experience and bring home something new.
Since last year, I have been taking advantage of the events organized by Python Pescara to discover new topics, meeting new people and, why not, sharing a beer with friends.
Every time I participate in an event, we organize a meeting or even just a call to plan an aperitech, at At the end I feel energized and satisfied. There is a sense of pride in seeing what you can achieve by working together, sharing ideas and building something concrete with the support of a community.
Have I convinced you? It might seem like a leap in the dark at first, but you’ll soon discover that it’s one of the best experiences rewarding things that you can experience. You’ll find yourself surrounded by people ready to help you, with endless opportunities to growth and the chance to leave your mark.
What are you waiting for? Grab a friend or colleague, if you don’t feel like taking this step alone, and go move yours first chair!
